We the People;today have a donut and a cup of coffee with me a 'stranger' " You never know. You just might be entertaining an angel! Courageous Citizen Friday
Serendipitous Thoughts by Sugar Bear "Flex Up—Read the Constitution" The wisdom of Jesus reminds us that the way we treat others shapes the kind of world we live in. When Jesus taught the Golden Rule “Do to others as you would have them do to you” He was calling us to a discipline of the heart that transforms communities. Golden Rule (Luke 6:31) Courageous citizenship begins with that discipline: treat the person across from you with the same dignity you hope to receive. But this requires something else too:
we must guard our hearts against restlessness and a critical spirit. A restless heart looks for faults. A critical spirit searches for enemies. But a courageous citizen searches for understanding, patience, imagination and grace ❤️ In today’s divided culture, that kind of respect takes courage. It requires humility and the willingness to see another person not as an opponent but as a neighbor.
This reflects the civic vision that begins with the words “We the People.” Those three words remind us that a republic does not belong to politicians or pundits. It belongs to citizens who are willing to carry its responsibilities through the framework of the United States Constitution. Raise the Sail—Are We Ready? Imagine the United States as a great ship launched by its people. The Constitution is the mast and the sail guiding the journey toward liberty. When the winds of conflict rise, the call goes out to the crew: Flex up are you ready? Raise the sail. • To form a more perfect union is tightening the ropes so the ship moves as one. • To establish justice is keeping the compass true.
• To insure domestic tranquility is maintaining balance on deck. • To provide for the common defense is strengthening the hull. • To promote the general welfare is sharing provisions across the ship. • To secure the blessings of liberty is sailing faithfully for those who come after us. The Constitution is not simply a historical document. It is a responsibility entrusted to every citizen. My Courage Challenge to you this Friday is: Start inside your 100-foot circle of influence. Today’s actions: • Flex up and read the Preamble of the Constitution. • Speak respectfully with someone whose opinion differs from yours. • Resist a restless and critical spirit, choose curiosity and respect instead. If you want to practice courageous citizenship in a practical way, consider getting involved with Braver Angels. You can: • Become a member • Volunteer in your local community • Take a workshop on better conversations across political differences • Or subscribe to the newsletter Learn more at: https://braverangels.org Small acts of respect can steady the ship of our republic. So today the call still echoes across the deck of democracy: Flex up are you ready? Raise the Sail; Take Action
God bless you and this ministry!
