Serendipitous Thoughts by Sugar Bear
"A Real Look in the Mirror"
I’m tired. Worn. My heart feels heavy because of this world.
So as I wake each morning, I remind myself of one grounding truth: the King is in the room.
Before the news.
Before the noise.
Before the arguments begin.
I let these words settle into my heart:
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 7:12
Then I ask myself an uncomfortable but necessary question:
If the roles were reversed my words, my tone, my social media post, my vote, even my silence would I want to be treated the way I am treating others right now?
As humans, our default setting isn’t selflessness. Mine sure isn’t. I tend to judge myself by my intentions and others by their actions. I excuse my own faults and build cases against theirs. That’s why Jesus keeps calling me back to the mirror not to shame me, but to free me. Lord, make it well with my soul.
Every day, we encounter someone difficult in our 100-foot circle of influence family, friends, coworkers, strangers. In a polarized world, the question becomes real fast: How do I live as a Courageous Citizen without losing my soul?
Jesus answered that as He closed His longest sermon. After teaching about anger, mercy, prayer, humility, and trust, He didn’t offer a loophole. He said, “in everything.” Every conversation. Every disagreement. Every political moment. Every time I feel the urge to win.
That’s where the tension lives the old slavery of sin whispering, prove your point, protect your pride, don’t back down. Sometimes I can’t let go of that need to win. And then comes the quieter voice of grace: You don’t have to try so hard. You don’t have to do this alone. I’ve got you.
Jesus has my back.
Freedom begins right there not in being right, but in being held. The Golden Rule becomes a spiritual plumb line. Before I speak or act, I pause and ask, If I were them, what would I need right now?
This is how Courageous Citizenship takes shape:
• Observe before reacting.
• Listen before labeling.
• Share hope, not heat.
God didn’t give us what we deserved. He gave us love. And love sets us free to live MAD—Make A Difference—one faithful step at a time.
God bless you and this ministry!
